McIntosh County lies between Glynn County to the south and Glynn County’s neighbor Brantley to the west, bordered on the east by the Atlantic coast marshes and the mouth of the Altamaha River delta, one of the most ecologically significant estuaries on the East Coast. Darien, the county seat, is one of Georgia’s oldest cities, with a history stretching back to the colonial era and a landscape shaped by the Altamaha River, the coastal marshes, and the working waterfront.

Darien sits on the Darien River, a tidal distributary of the Altamaha system, and has been a commercial and maritime community since the 18th century. US 17 passes through downtown Darien crossing the Altamaha River on the Darien Bridge and serves as the primary north south route through the county, connecting McIntosh County to Brunswick to the south and Savannah to the north.

US 17 is the main artery through McIntosh County, carrying a mix of local traffic, tourist vehicles navigating the Colonial Coast, and commercial trucks between Florida and the Georgia coast. The two lane sections of US 17 through rural McIntosh County with limited passing opportunities and narrow shoulders are sites of both head on and run off collisions.
